Program

A "Typical" Day at Day Camps

Main Presentation (10:00-10:45)

This occurs with all age groups, or all but the eldest group. It takes place in a large room, focused at one end with a 'stage' area and projection screen.

Refreshments (10:45-10:55)

Nutritious refreshments are supplied by the parish. Often this is done in devotion groups so as to encourage the groups to get to know each other.

Devotions (10:55-11:20) and Activities (11:20-11:55)

ScramblersPre-Kindergarten/Kindergarten
ClimbersGrades 1 & 2
ExplorersGrades 3 & 4
PathfindersGrades 5 & 6

These are done in groups according to age. With the assistance of leaders the children explore the meaning of the day's story and theme by reading it from the Bible and through discussion. Also, creativitiy is encouraged in this exploration, both through crafts, journaling and playing games.

Grace (11:55) Lunch (12:00-12:30)

All the age groups come together at 11:55 to sing and say Grace. After that is done, the parish supplies Lunch monitors and the teams (parish and travelling) have a 30 minute break. This is a relaxing time and often ends up being one of the many times when travelling and parish team have a chance to bond. Briefly, problems or good news from the morning can be brought forward so that the teams can work together to improve them.

Scrambler Afternoon Program (12:30-2:45)(or Scramblers leave after lunch)

This program is an optional extra for parishes who wish their Scramblers to stay in the afternoon. It includes a nap/story time, various creative crafts and games. It takes a lot of preparation but is very rewarding in the long run.

Creative Connection (12:30-1:15)

Everyone, other than the Scramblers, participate in the Creative Connection. During this time the children focus their creative energy on creating various contributions for the Day Camp Closing Service. This is done in groups of mixed ages. The groups do a different 'Connection' each day and on the fifth day they bring the four Connections together. It is an important part of the program not only because it encourages creativity, but also because it gives the children an opportunity to participate and influence the worship of a parish in different ways. The connections often include a Liturgical Dance and a Dramatic Reading of some kind as well as decorations for the church, in the form of candles, Altar Cloths, Vestments for clergy, and a Jesse Tree.

Special Event (1:15-2:45)

The Special Event is a wide game. It's often filled with people dressed in odd costumes, loud cheering contests and lots of excitement and fun. From a Fun Fair with various games to be played, to the Day Camp Olympics to water games, these are often thought by kids to be one the most exciting parts of the day.

Closing Song & Prayer (2:45-3:00)

Having completed the Special Event (or Scrambler Afternoon Program), everybody is brought together to sing one of their favourite songs from the day and a final prayer is said to close the day's activities. Parents then arrive and take their children home.

Team Meetings

Before the start of the day (9 o'clock) and at the end of the day (3 o'clock) the Parish and Travelling Teams, along with Coordinators and Clergy where possible, have a meeting. In the morning this is an opportunity to have a short devotion led bythe Clergy a quick look at the day's plan. The Afternoons are spent in reviewing the day, looking at special considerations for the morrow, and in detailed planning of the next day's activities.
